God of War Laufey is a full-scale game set in the God of War universe. And it’s the first mainline title where Kratos isn’t the central playable character. Instead, you’ll be playing as his wife, Laufey.

Yes, Kratos will be in God of War Laufey. So, don’t worry Kratos fans – your favourite rage-fuelled powerhouse isn’t going to be a complete no-show. While he’s not the main playable character, he is Laufey’s husband. Which means he’ll show up in some key scenes across the course of the story. Some of the early screenshots we’ve seen even show him in a location that resembles ancient Greece. Could we be heading back there for a level or two? We can’t wait to find out.

You can buy the Standard Edition of God of War Laufey on disc. It’ll be one of the PlayStation 5’s last big physical releases though. Sony Interactive Entertainment are set to pivot away from disc-based games entirely from January 2028. From then on, you’ll only be able to buy and play their games digitally.

While Kratos was a battering ram, tearing through waves of opponents using his sheer strength and aggression, Laufey is far more nimble and agile. Up close, she wields a sword to attack with lightning-fast speed, chaining fluid combos and dodge-counters together to slay her foes. For fighting at range, her trusty Serpent Bow unleashes multi-arrow volleys that decimate groups of monsters before they get too close.

Yes, there’s going to be another God of War game at some point in the future. Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio’s Creative Director) confirmed this in an interview at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. And he also said that the new Kratos-led adventure will tie directly into the events of God of War Laufey. All of that info makes this latest release a must-play!

Laufey is neither a prequel or a sequel. Instead, it runs parallel to the story of God of War and God of War Ragnarök. You’ll take control of Laufey, experiencing the action from her perspective as Kratos and Atreus head off on their own journey.

Laufey - or Faye for short - is a huge character in the Viking era of God of War. And quite literally too. For starters, she’s a legendary Jötunn (giant) warrior. And of course, she’s also Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. How’s that for a powerful family? It’s her death and final request to spread her ashes at the highest peak of the Nine Realms that kickstarts the entire Norse saga.
